How to Prepare Your Vehicle for Collection by a Single Car Transporter

When you're getting ready to hand over your vehicle to a single car transporter, preparation is essential. At LocalTransport.co.uk, we ensure smooth and secure transport, but your role starts before collection.

1. Clean Your Vehicle – Inside and Out

Before your vehicle is collected:

  • Wash the exterior: This allows you and the transporter to spot any existing scratches, dents, or paint chips.
  • Clean the interior: Remove personal items, valuables, and unnecessary accessories that may shift during transport.

A clean vehicle helps in documenting its condition and reduces the risk of disputes.

2. Inspect and Document the Vehicle’s Condition

Perform a detailed inspection:

  • Take high-resolution photos of the car from all angles.
  • Note any existing damage, including windshield cracks, bumper scuffs, or rim scratches.
  • Record the current odometer reading.

This inspection report can be shared with the transporter as proof of pre-collection condition.

3. Check for Fluid Leaks and Mechanical Issues

Ensure the vehicle is in safe condition for loading:

  • Inspect the engine, brake, and transmission fluids.
  • Check for any visible leaks under the car.
  • Report any starting issues or mechanical faults to the transport company.

If your car doesn’t start or roll, the transporter needs to bring special equipment.

4. Maintain a Low Fuel Level

Keep fuel levels around ¼ tank:

  • Enough to drive the vehicle on and off the truck
  • Not so much that it adds extra weight or safety risk

This is a standard practice across most vehicle transporters.

5. Disable Alarms and Toll Tags

Remove or disable:

  • Toll tags: They may be charged during transport if not removed.
  • Alarms: Prevent unnecessary disruptions during transport.

These small steps help avoid complications and unexpected charges.

6. Check Tyre Pressure and Battery

Make sure your car is in good rolling condition:

  • Inflate tyres to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Test the battery and charge if needed.

Transporters may refuse non-rolling vehicles unless arranged in advance.

7. Secure Loose Parts and Remove Add-ons

Transport can get bumpy. Remove or secure:

  • Spoilers, bike racks, or roof boxes
  • Custom accessories that may get damaged or fall off during loading

Anything loose could be a hazard.

8. Gather All Relevant Documents

Prepare the following:

  • Vehicle registration
  • Proof of insurance
  • Identification and booking reference

This ensures a smooth handover when the driver arrives.

9. Coordinate Timing and Location with Your Transporter

Be ready at the collection location:

  • Have your mobile on and charged
  • Keep your schedule flexible in case of delays

Ensure clear access for the transporter’s truck.

10. Final Handover Checklist

Before you hand over the keys:

  • Walk around the vehicle with the driver
  • Confirm condition report and documents are signed
  • Ask questions about delivery timing and contact details

This sets expectations and builds transparency.

Why Preparation Matters

Proper preparation:

  • Protects your vehicle from avoidable damage
  • Ensures quicker and smoother collection
  • Gives you peace of mind throughout the process
