Questions about jump start

Not always, but a flat battery is the most common cause, especially after lights left on, a run of short trips, or cold weather. If a jump start gets you going but it happens again, the battery or charging system likely needs attention.

Done correctly, yes. The risk comes from connecting leads in the wrong order or to the wrong points, which can spark near battery gases or send a surge through the electronics. We connect in the correct sequence to a proper earth point. Our jump-start safety guide explains the method.

If it's visibly damaged, leaking, cracked or frozen, or if there's a strong sulphur/rotten-egg smell, it should not be jumped — that's a replacement or recovery situation, not a boost.

A jump gets you moving now. Whether it stays fixed depends on why it went flat — a one-off (lights left on) versus an ageing battery or a charging fault. We'll give you an honest view on the day.

The 12V auxiliary battery in most hybrids can be boosted, but the method differs and you should never use a hybrid or EV to donate a jump. Tell us the make and model when you call.
