How to Jump Start a Car Battery Safely

The correct order for connecting jump leads, the earthing rule that prevents sparks near the battery, and the situations where you should not attempt a jump start at all.

Before you start: is a jump start the right move?

A flat 12-volt battery is one of the most common reasons a car will not start, especially after cold nights, short journeys or leaving lights or an interior lamp on. A jump start using leads from a healthy vehicle, or a portable jump pack, will often get you going. But it is not always safe or appropriate, and modern cars add complications, so it is worth a short read before you connect anything.

You will need a set of good-quality jump leads (or a portable jump pack), a running donor vehicle with a healthy battery of the same voltage (almost all cars are 12V), and both handbooks to hand if possible. Never let the two vehicles touch, and make sure both are in neutral or park with the handbrakes on and ignitions off before you begin.

The correct order to connect jump leads

The order matters, both for it to work and for safety. Connecting in the wrong order — particularly finishing on the flat battery's negative terminal — risks a spark right next to the battery, which can ignite the hydrogen gas a battery gives off. Follow this sequence:

  • Connect the red (positive) lead to the positive (+) terminal of the flat battery.
  • Connect the other end of the red lead to the positive (+) terminal of the good battery.
  • Connect the black (negative) lead to the negative (-) terminal of the good battery.
  • Connect the other end of the black lead to an unpainted, solid metal earth point on the flat-battery car — such as a bare bolt on the engine block or a dedicated earthing point — well away from the battery and away from any moving parts or fuel lines.

That final connection is the one people get wrong. Do not clip the black lead to the flat battery's negative terminal. Earthing to bare metal away from the battery means any small spark on that last connection happens away from the gas the battery is venting.

Starting the vehicles in the right sequence

With the leads connected, start the donor (working) car first and let it run for a few minutes at a fast idle. This lets its alternator put some charge into the flat battery. Then try to start the car with the flat battery. If it does not fire on the first attempt, wait a little longer and let the donor car keep running before trying again — repeated long cranking can overheat the starter and drain both batteries.

Once the previously flat car is running, leave both engines running for a few minutes. Then disconnect the leads in the reverse order to how you connected them: earth point first, then the good battery negative, then the good battery positive, and finally the positive on the recovered car. Take care that the clamps do not touch each other or any bodywork while there is still a live connection.

Afterwards: keep it running

A jump start gets the engine going, but it does not recharge a flat battery — the alternator has to do that. After a successful jump start, keep the engine running and ideally take a decent drive of at least 20 to 30 minutes to put charge back in. Avoid switching the engine off straight away, or you may find yourself flat again.

If the battery goes flat again soon after, or the car will not hold a charge, the battery is likely at the end of its life or there is a charging fault. Repeatedly jump starting a failing battery is a short-term fix at best. At that point it is usually a battery replacement or a charging-system check rather than another jump.

When you should NOT attempt a jump start

Some situations make a jump start genuinely unsafe. Do not attempt one if:

  • The battery is visibly damaged, cracked, bulging or leaking — any acid leak or split casing means the battery must not be charged or jumped.
  • The battery is frozen. A battery that has frozen (you may see a bulged case or hear no fluid movement) can rupture or explode if you attempt to jump it. Let it thaw and inspect it first.
  • There is a rotten-egg or sulphur smell around the battery. That smell is the battery venting hydrogen sulphide, a sign of overcharging or internal failure, and a real explosion risk near any spark.

In any of these cases, keep away from the battery, do not connect leads, and get the battery inspected or replaced instead.

Hybrids, EVs and modern batteries

Modern vehicles need extra care. Most hybrids still have a conventional 12V auxiliary battery that can go flat and can usually be jump started at the manufacturer's designated points — but you must check the handbook first, as the connection points are often not the battery itself. Critically, you should never use a hybrid or electric vehicle as the donor car to jump-start another vehicle; their systems are not designed to supply that current and you can cause expensive damage.

Full electric vehicles should not be jump started from their high-voltage system at all, and their 12V systems have specific procedures — always follow the handbook or call for help. Many newer petrol and diesel cars use start-stop batteries (AGM or EFB), which are more sensitive; these can generally be jumped but need the correct procedure and a healthy replacement if they fail. If in any doubt about your vehicle type, do not guess.

The risk to modern car electronics

Beyond the physical hazards, today's cars are full of sensitive electronics — engine control units (ECUs), body control modules and infotainment systems. A wrong connection, a reversed polarity, or a voltage spike during a botched jump start can damage the ECU or other modules, and those repairs are far more costly than the original flat battery. Reversing the leads even briefly can blow fuses or fry control units.

This is why getting the order and the earth point right matters, and why, on an expensive or unfamiliar vehicle, many drivers prefer a professional jump start where the correct procedure and equipment are used. If you are not confident, it is safer to call for help than to risk the electronics.
