How Roadside Assistance and Recovery Pricing Works

An honest, no-nonsense explanation of the factors that shape a roadside or recovery quote — so you know what affects the price before you call.

Why there is no single fixed price

People often want a single number for "how much is a call-out?", and the honest answer is that it depends on the job. Every roadside situation is different, and a fair quote reflects the specifics of yours. Rather than quote a headline figure that turns out not to apply, it is more useful to explain the factors that shape a quote — so when you call, you understand what affects it and can give the information that lets us price it accurately.

The good news is that these factors are straightforward. Once you know them, you can usually anticipate roughly what kind of job you have on your hands.

Distance and mileage

Distance is one of the biggest factors. That includes how far we travel to reach you and, for a recovery, how far your vehicle then needs to be taken. A local job a few miles away is naturally different from a long-distance recovery across counties. If you are having your car taken to a specific home or garage, the mileage of that leg matters too.

When you call, giving your location and your intended destination lets us factor the mileage in from the start, so the quote reflects the actual distance involved rather than a guess.

Time of day

The time of day and day of the week can affect a quote. A daytime call-out during normal hours is generally different from a late night, early morning, weekend or bank holiday call-out, simply because those unsocial hours cost more to cover. This is standard across the industry and nothing unusual.

If your situation is not an emergency and can wait, mentioning that on the call gives more flexibility. If it is urgent, we will still help — it just helps to know so we can be clear with you about what to expect.

Vehicle type

The type and size of your vehicle plays a part. A small hatchback, a large SUV, a van, an automatic, a four-wheel-drive or an electric vehicle can each call for different handling or equipment. Some vehicles must be carried on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground, which is a factor in how a job is resourced.

Telling us the make, model and any relevant details — such as a very low car, a modified vehicle or an EV — means we bring the right equipment first time and can quote accurately rather than revising it on arrival.

Recovery versus a fix on site

There is a real difference between a fix at the roadside and a full recovery. A jump start or a tyre change on the spot is a different kind of job from loading your vehicle onto a truck and transporting it elsewhere. Sometimes what starts as a hoped-for quick fix turns out to need recovery — for instance, a puncture that cannot be safely repaired, or a battery that will not hold a charge.

Describing the symptoms when you call helps us judge whether it is likely to be a roadside fix or a recovery, and price accordingly. We would always rather be straight with you about which it is than surprise you later.

Difficulty of access

How easy it is to reach and load your vehicle can affect the work involved. A car parked awkwardly, stuck in mud or snow, in a tight underground car park, on a steep or narrow lane, or in a difficult position after an incident can take more time and effort than a vehicle sitting on an open, level road.

If your vehicle is in a tricky spot, mention it. It is not a problem to deal with, but knowing in advance means the right approach and equipment are planned rather than discovered on arrival.

Getting an accurate quote

The simplest way to get a clear price for your exact situation is to call and describe it. With your location, your vehicle, what has happened and where you want the car to go, we can give you an honest quote up front — no vague figures and no surprises.
